Corn Dog "Muffins" - Sunday Foodie Bits

Corn Dog "Muffins" - Sunday Foodie Bits | Anxiously Being Havok

I finally failed, guys.
Well, let me adjust that.
What I cooked up turned out the way it should have, but it was not at all what I had wanted, and not at all something I would recommend.

In the interest of being honest, I'm still going to share this experiment, but also in the interest of honesty, I will say I do not suggest anyone try this one.
It's not horrible, and it's not bad, it's just not good.

The recipe sounded brilliant - corn dog muffins. We love corn dogs over here - have I mentioned that we could eat like bachelors every day and be happy? Keep this in mind!
And somehow, I had a grand idea that it would be amazingly delicious. Super easy, too. And not at all weird.

I was wrong on all counts.

So far as the directions go, I had to improvise a bit:
First, I don't have a muffin pan. I know, though, that in no way did this affect the taste of the finished "product". I used a bread pan (I guess it's a bread pan?), which is the same kind of pan (the metal-y kind, not the glass kind) as a muffin pan would be.
Second, I don't know how this recipe was only going to make 24 mini muffins. I ended up with basically a whole "loaf" of the stuff...and I know how small mini muffins are. I don't think the math adds up!
Third, I should have thought a little harder about the fact that I was making a "loaf" and not mini muffins - this took almost an hour to cook!

This should have been a sign of possible failure. No, I don't know the size of the bowl, but it's what I easily consider a "large mixing bowl".

And this should have also concerned me - this is a regular loaf pan, and it's obviously brimming with this mixture of stuff (corn bread mix and hot dogs).

In theory, it should have been delicious. I love corn bread. Growing up, my parents would make chili and corn bread for dinner on a regular basis, and I loved it - because it meant I would get a large piece of corn bread to just eat like a cookie. Which is the only way to eat corn bread, so long as it is made right (which requires the consistency to be sort of like a brownie). I love the stuff.
And hot dogs aren't so bad. They're great when added to macaroni and cheese, and I love going to Costco for hot dogs (lunch for 1.50$, count me in!).

It looks good, right? Looks like bread! And yet...oh, and yet.

It did not stay together. At all. I know that cornbread can be cut into actual pieces. This does not normally happen.
I'm guessing it's the hot dog juices (which I somehow managed to get all over the counter when I was slicing them up, as they were extra "juicy" - don't think about it too much!).

And, really, it tasted like bleh. Like I said, not bad, but not good. The Mister didn't finish his. He didn't say it was bad, but he couldn't power through. I managed to, and had some more of it for lunch the next day (as I was out of bread for a PB&J, so my options were limited), but it was basically playing a game of finding the chunks of corn bread that tasted good, versus picking out the corn dog bits to eat separately. I still have half a container in the fridge that I need to chuck, as it's just not going to get eaten. Even ketchup couldn't fix this mess.

Finally, a recipe that won't get added to my collection.

  1. Oh dear! Good for you for giving it a go though - I never bake, I'm such a disaster in the kitchen x

  2. I'm a disaster in that I always end up making a mess when I'm doing anything beyond pasta (and even that can end up out of the pan and on the stove!). I once ended up with egg all over the kitchen floor while making brownies once! xD

  3. I am so sorry it turned out that way! I don't bake--at least, not by myself. My sister and my mom are the real bakers, but I am such a disaster when it comes to doing things on my own! (my infamous brownies are always rock-hard, or just too dry!)
Hmm..maybe you needed to add more liquid? Or, as I read on a forum once before, "if the crumb is fragile, try baking it sooner and not proofing so long. Some doughs have incredible extensibility and shouldn't be allowed to rise to their limits or full potential. The result is an airy crumb that is only held together by the crust. The inside crumb collapses or tears apart when cutting."

  4. Yeah, I think a lot of it had to do with the amount of liquid involved (darn hot dogs!) and just how much of the corn bread mixture there actually was! The middle got cooked, but it didn't get...gelled together. Or something like that, anyway!
I don't quite "understand" baking, per say, as to why things rise in certain ways and all that, but I do know that if I follow the recipe, more often than not what I make will turn out, so, like in this instance, my improvisation was my downfall xD

Thank you so very much for stopping by and commenting, I really appreciate it, dear :) xx
