Books and Things [and the magic of losing hours without realizing it]

Staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning reading in bed is a magical thing. If you have not had the opportunity to do this recently, I highly suggest it. Especially when you are on the 5th book in a series of 5 books and you just have to know how the story ends and you love the characters and the story and, just...yes.
You should try it, you really should.

I'm not sure how or why, but I decided to read recently. I haven't actually read anything in quite a while. I tried, and would start a book, but never stick with it. I read the first Game of Thrones book around the time when we moved, and got onto the second and then...just, didn't stick with it.

But on January 23rd, I started reading Pawn of Prophecy - the first book in The Belgariad series. I've had the books for a few years, had read the first book and part of the second and, well, as reading tends to go for me, I didn't stick with it.
Though, I have somehow managed to read all five books. And I finished up with them on the 7th of February.

I'm glad it's done, but I'm also sad that it's done...which means that I will have to, at some point, get a hold of The Malloreon, which is the series that follows, as well as the two prequels. Because, obviously, I can't just leave well enough alone, I need more. That's my life.

Many nights in the past two weeks have been spent staying up far too late reading. It has been glorious.
Well, not so glorious when it means that I'm not up at a decent hour the next day, but it was worth it.

I've kind of become obsessed with reading.

I've filled up a drawer in the dresser next to my bed, of books to read next. Okay, let me take that back. It's a dresser drawer, sure, but it also has a textbook in it that I may be referencing (we'll see if I decide to or not), as well as some graphic novels (though I do want to read them again) and a learn-to-play-guitar book that is for Led Zeppelin songs.
But also books I want to read.

And I'm using the Google Rewards app, which is an app tied to your Google account, and it sends you surveys every once in a while, and you get some change for them...change that is then spendable in the Play Store. And you can buy e-books with it.
So I've bought a few books (one of which is My Man Jeeves, and that series of books is what the TV show Jeeves & Wooster is based off of, and I love that show).

I made a Goodreads account.

And I'm keeping a list/reference of what I've read and when (which is how I know how long it took me to read The Belgariad series).

And, of course, I'm taking advantage of the free classics on both Amazon Kindle and Google Books, because I quite enjoy a ton of those as well...and why not have them ready to go if the desire strikes to re-read some of them?

It's weird.
I used to read a ton growing up. I would read multiple books at a time, and I would read the books for school outside of class time and enjoyed it. When we read To Kill a Mockingbird, I read most of it one morning, since for some reason I had got woken up randomly at about 1 am, and somehow thought it was 5 am and proceeded to get ready for school, but to read a little since that was still early. Looked at a clock a little while later, only to realize that, no, it was much earlier...but I was already awake, so I read through the rest of the morning and finished it on the bus on the way to school. It was a way of life, so to speak.
And then as soon as I was out of high school, basically, I didn't read any more.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I bought plenty of books, and I read a little here or there. I kept the books that I already had, and shuffled them about my room, wishing I had more room in my bedroom and bookshelf.
But I never made sure to spend time reading. Maybe on my lunch break at work, or maybe a little at random times, but no more spending an afternoon in a book.

And now, randomly, I'm spending hours stuck in a book. I'm enjoying it. But I'm not holding my breath that it will stick around.
A lot of things just don't stick around for me, really.
I will, however, enjoy it while it lasts. And I will be spending some time the next day or two reading My Man Jeeves (and, of course after seeing the show, reading in Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry's voices for the characters, as one does).

Do you have any books that you would suggest to prolong the reading-mojo?

  1. Ooh where to start! I love the Belgariad, that series got me into reading Fantasy when I was younger. You will like the rest of the series especially the two prequels. The PG Wodehouse books are great, so funny. I would recommend:

anything by Lois McMaster Bujold https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lois_McMaster_Bujold
Steven Brust (especially his Taltos series) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Brust
Jim Butcher (esp. Dresden Files) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Butcher
    Charles De Lint https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_de_Lint
    Diana Wynne Jones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Wynne_Jones
    David Gemmell (esp. Waylander) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gemmell

My top recommendation after Brust would be anything by Roger Zelazny, especially his Amber series (10 books, all great)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Zelazny

I could go on and on, can you tell I am an avid reader too? I can't go a day without reading, and those late nights where you have been so absorbed in a book that you have not noticed time passing are very familiar!

    1. I had heard the Belgariad was great back in high school and tried it, but it didn't stick. Somehow took me almost ten years, ha! But totally worth it :D
I finished up My Man Jeeves last night, actually, and could do without the business with Pepper, but I can see how Bertie came from Pepper, though Bertie is a much more likable chap ;)

Thank you so much for the recommendations - the Taltos series looks amazing, and I had no idea that the Dresden Files were a series of books! I've heard plenty about the RPG, but thought it was a TV show! Never actually looked it up, which I probably should have, as hearing about the game always sounded fantastic.
Definitely adding these to my Goodreads list (will have to find a way to organize it, ha, or maybe just write one out...that'd probably be best, ha!) as there's no way I could get them all right now, but considering there's a ton of books here, I should be set for quite a while, thank you so much! :D

And as always, thank you so very much for stopping by :)

    2. My pleasure, just give a shout out when you want a new list... The Dresden Files were made into a TV series but they only took some things from the books and left out quite a few characters. Not bad, but the books are way better.

    3. It sucks how TV shows and movies do that to great stories. I understand the need to make things fit into a time frame, but if you love a story so much you want to adapt it into film of some kind, why are you trying to change the story?! I've never understood that xD
      Thank you so much! :)
