Letters and Crayons

If you follow me on Instagram, you've more than likely seen some of my new favorite activity.
I believe it's called "lettering", but I'm not 100% on that.
Either way, using pretty fonts to write quotes, sometimes with a doodle/badly drawn image included.

Now, I have almost horrible handwriting - you've seen this in the posts that include pictures of my planner pages. It's legible, sure, but it's nowhere near anything considered attractive.
And one of the things I've been wanting to work on for 2015 is better handwriting - even if that just means no more scribbles, I'm alright with that!

I've also stopped trying to decorate in Mr. Finsbury. Pretty dividers and dashboards, sure, but the actual daily pages? No thank you - far too tedious for me to keep up with. I wasn't appreciating the washi or stickers, and it felt like a chore. I haven't been working on Project Life, I haven't been doing any journaling past in my Hobonichi - I was in desperate need of a creative something-or-other.

So, "lettering" seemed to be the right course at the time.
Well, along with just doing whatever-whatever in my Bionicle Midori (because what else do you do in something so colorful?).

There is no rhyme or reason to it, just what sounds like a good thing to "write" at the time, and maybe a picture to go with it. Some get more love and attention than others. Some get more color. It's just a matter of what I feel like at the time - as creative pursuit ought to be.

Since I'm putting these into my Bionicle Midori, they have to be small enough to be glued onto Field Notes sized pages (which themselves are only 3.5x5.5), so my space to work is about 3x4, or some variation of that. Not a lot of room, but enough to do what I want, without the pressure of the blank page.
Which is also nice, since they're a small enough size to be finished in one sitting, but large enough to entertain myself with for a decent amount of time.

And that time is usually relaxing. Focusing on the shape of letters is somehow peaceful. That alone makes these little "doodles" worth the time and effort put into them.
No, I haven't timed how long one takes, but  know it's a shorter amount of time than I would like!

Either way, I figured I would share some of them with you.
One, because I'm oddly proud of them.
Two, because I like what they say.
Three, because all you need is paper, pencil, and black pen to make something cool.
Four, because I wish I would have started doing these years ago.

(Also, yes, I realize it's probably weird to have a booklet with green paper. But I like the green.)

Not going to lie, I'm pretty disappointed that I screwed up Pooh's shoulder after getting almost the rest of him just right. But you didn't notice it, right?

I was corrected on Instagram, that this would only be four times as much...which actually makes more sense. Darn you Pinterest, for leading me astray!

This was the first one, and I'm rather proud of it - even if it was just a carbon copy of something I found online. I didn't trace any of it, so I'm still proud of it.

This one I screwed up. I tried to erase my pencil before the black ink was dry, and said meh, I'll survive with it messy. Not my favorite, but I do like the fox!

This one, well, I just love the sentiment. This was on a sign for an ice cream shop on Pinterest, and I couldn't help myself.

And this one belongs to Nirvana, but it just suited my mood at the time. As did the blue sunshine and purple sky. Does it make sense? Does any of the song itself make sense? Goes together perfect!

Plus, I love any excuse to color.

P.S. A trick I've found to be super awesome - download free fonts, and type up whatever you want to "letter" into your word processor of choice - sometimes, the sayings I find online don't match the way I want them to look, and this solves that 100%. :)

  1. Love these - such a nice way to spend a creative hour or so! I have been using calligraphy pens and working on my handwriting lately, very satisfying seeing the improvement when writing my Christmas cards.....

  2. Thank you!
I've tried calligraphy before, but was just with the slanted tip pen. It was alright, and I will probably end up picking one up eventually, since now I'm learning more how to shape letters beyond cursive and my normal handwriting :D
I'm glad to hear that practicing has an effect on handwriting - mine isn't atrocious, but I would at least settle for even and consistent instead of three different ways of writing the same letter!
Thank you so much for stopping by! It really makes me happy to see comments from you, dear :)

  3. Love all of these! I agree, sometimes when I feel out of inspiration I doodle words. It's relaxing enough, and I like to go on dafont.com and try different kinds of handwriting or even just find quotes to do out in calligraphy.
    I didn't notice any screwed-up shoulder...Pooh looks adorable! xx

  4. I'm glad you didn't notice the shoulder bit - it's hidden well enough, but its'still a pretty bad screw up compared to the rest of the piece!
I will have to check out dafont.com, since I'm still trying to find letter styles that I enjoy!
Thank you for all of your lovely comments! xx
