Right before we moved, I got on an improvement "kick". I conjured up two entirely new projects - which I have somehow stayed attached to after being in the new house, and have even started on them.
The first being my Home Management binder, which I adore.
The second being more, well, inward.
The move has taught me something - my body hates me.
It feels much too old to belong to someone of my age. Folding laundry or doing dishes hurts my back, from the slight bend-over required for these tasks. Moving boxes around, in and out of the truck, has hurt far more than it should, and I'm not nearly as capable as I once was, or should be. Sitting on the floor cross-legged, I can only stay for long before either my legs or hips start to yell in pain.
I'm not old enough for this.
I've had problems with pain in the past, mostly in regards to my knees, and I'm still feeling that pain from time to time.
And it's getting to be more and more ridiculous.
To be blunt, I am sitting far too often. My desk is a great place to hang out, sure, but sitting here for hours and hours is doing me no good. A body in motion stays in motion, all that nonsense. Well, I've learned this the hard way - and that a body that lacks motion, well, hates you. With a fierce hate, let's be real.
This, of course, means activity.
And even just trying a few things the past week, I've learned that, yes, my body hates me, and, yes, I am not capable as I ought to be. It's sad, really.
But stretching and pretend-yoga-ing has helped, in an odd way. Moving about has felt good. Certainly not while I'm struggling with a plank, but after doing a few various stretches and pilate-esque repetitions, it feels good.
A body in motion means it can stay in motion.
But it also means that there is blood flowing, and somehow not feeling so, well, junky. There is no good reason why a person in decently good health (as per recent blood work, so I'm not pretending!) at the age of almost 24 has back pain while folding the laundry. It's insane. And I do not want it to continue.
So it won't.
I may not have a concrete plan, but activity...that's all that matters at this point.
Plus, I have a new city to explore (on foot). New roads to find out where they go, and new places to see. That's always exciting, right?
I've found plenty of things to do at home, with no equipment, on Pinterest, and have printed out and collected a bunch of the "better" activities (read: things I can actually do at this point), for reference without the Internet (to take about the house, of course).
And of course, drinking more water, and eating less Doritos and drinking less Mountain Dew. Because we all know that's not helpful.
I'm not interested in this for appearance reasons. I have nothing against my body in it's form. I have a problem with it's function. It should be able to do more, and I can make it do that. It just requires getting up more often than I have been. I'm okay with that.
Do you have any favorite activities? Any recommendations of things to try?

P.S. If you do walking or running, I recommend the Nike+ app. I have used it in the past, and it is fabulous. It tracks you via GPS, and you can have it tell you when you have completed a mile, how long it took, etc. There are achievements to reach, it keeps track of your calories burned, and allows an easy way to keep track of all your running or walking. It is free for Android and iOS, and requires only that you make an account. I don't own anything Nike, and I can use the app 100% (other than marking what shoe I'm wearing, and I'm perfectly fine with that!).
Well done for managing the move by the way, hope it is going well settling in. I need to start doing more exercise, and am planning on going my local free swimming pool for a regular swim/sauna. I have planned to meet up with friends for walks as a gentle way to getting into moving more also. Good intentions, have to see how this translates into reality! Do you have someone who would jog / swim /walk with you? I find I am far more likely to do something if I feel I don't want to let a friend down...
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! We aren't 100% settled yet, but it's beyond being just live-able - just a matter of finding where to put all our stoage-y stuff!
DeleteSwimming is a great way to work out! I'm horrendous at it, and we don't have a pool anywhere near here (so far as I'm aware), so that is off the table (but I never really took advantage of it when it was, either!).
I do not have anyone to go with. Two years ago, when I had the same ideas, I got the Mister to go running with me a few times. He grinned and bared it, but it wasn't his idea of a good time. I am lucky though in that the exercise room for our apartment complex is literally next door, and there are 2 treadmills, and elliptical, and a stationary bike, so there is no way it would be too difficult to walk next door to get some work out time in! Plus, my mom is also working on being more active, and they have a treadmill, so while we may not live close, we can still hold each other accountable through email and text message. :)
Wishing you the best in your endeavors as well, dear! And as always, thank you so much for stopping by time and time again - it means so much to me to read your comments!
