Eating a Rainbow

That's a thing, right?
I mean, uh, so far as eating fruits and vegetables goes, right? Eat all of the colors, as often as you can? That's a thing?

Because, while you could say that Cheetos count as orange, I don't think that's what that statement means.
And while we haven't given up Cheetos completely (how could I, when they were $1.79 each this week?), we have done a weird thing.
We've been eating vegetables. And fruit.

You see, the Mister has always liked vegetables, and about every month and a half or so, when we would go out and get snack foods, he would come home with some sort of vegetable tray or fancy salad (or combination of the two).
And I don't remember why exactly, but a few weeks ago, I asked the Mister if he would eat carrots if I bought carrots. But, you know, like real carrots...not the pre-peeled and cut ones (baby carrots, I guess). He said, yes, please and thank you.

So I did. And we ate them all (in a night, even).
Peeling carrots isn't fun, but it's not terrible. Much easier than potatoes, though.

And now, we have more vegetables. And fruits!
We have bananas. And oranges. And carrots. Lettuce and broccoli and grapes, too. We had radishes one week (which, I've learned, are gross) as well as spinach (which, apparently, is not so great to buy by the bunch).

We used to eat lots of chips. Because, they are delicious.
But now, we have fruits and vegetable.

We obviously still have chips - Cheetos were on sale, guys, I couldn't say no. But it's much less than it would normally be. Last week, we had fruit and veg, and two boxes of Cheez-its (since they were on sale, of course).

One of the reasons I've never purchased fruit and vegetables before, though, is because it's not cheaper.
And, yeah, no, it's not cheaper. I'm spending the same on groceries as I was before. Granted, I'm able to not have to make a snack run to the store, because we've run out of chips halfway through the week, but the overall expenditure is the same.
Plus, there is the additional requirement, now, of buying Hidden Valley ranch or better. Because, according to a certain someone in my house, generic store brand ranch is gross (hint: it's not me, as I grew up on generic store brand ranch).

Chips in general are easier. You grab a bag of chips from the kitchen, and you eat them. Hunger solved.
With carrots, for example, you either have to peel and cut them before hand, or do it while you're hungry...then deal with all the carrot skins...then gather ranch...then do dishes when it's all done.
It's so much more work. And it's really not that much more delicious (we like chips, of course).

But, really, it's not that different. Though I do like having a full-er fridge to look at, versus cluttered counters.

Also, carrots are still orange. And I'm quite fond of orange foods. So it works.

  1. My kids love raw carrots. They just learned peeling recently, so they will go and get them out of the drawer in the fridge, peel, and eat them. I cheat and get the baby ones sometimes - because I do not like peeling them! But, they taste different to me. We are planning on planting purple carrots this spring. We have grown them in the past and the kids love them :-) Good for you for getting fruits and veggies! As far as radishes go, saute them up with some butter. Butter makes everything better ;-)

    1. The baby ones are a bit different, I agree. I didn't know that until recently, though, ha! Though they tend to go bad faster - but maybe that's just because we aren't storing them properly.
I have never had purple carrots before; don't think I've ever seen any before, either. Do they taste any different?
Oh, the radishes were covered in ranch dressing (and ranch makes everything taste better ;) ) and it was still a zesty sour blech xD If we get some again, though, I will have to try them this way! :D
Thank you so very much for stopping by! :D

    1. A google search suggested that *all* carrots used to be purple at one point, and there were less-consumed varieties that popped up were white or yellow, and that the orange ones were "bred" so to speak out of those white and yellow ones. Also, apparently, the orange ones are a tad sweeter and provide more carroty-goodness per plant. Though, I've never noticed any sweetness to orange carrots, so I wonder what the purple ones would taste like?! xD
Thank you so much for stopping by! :D
