Planning in a Traveler's Notebook

I am a liar.
I used to claim that I could never plan in a traveler's notebook, that I would hate not being able to put something in wherever I wanted, or change how things were whenever I wanted. I wouldn't be able to plan in a traveler's notebook because it felt too much like a journal, there wasn't any convenient way to store things (except for buying expensive zipper pouches). It wouldn't work for me at all, I would hate it and just be miserable and would immediately switch back to Mr. Finsbury, because I love him so much.

Which, that last part is true. I love Mr. Finsbury. He has been a workhorse, coming with me all sorts of places and holding so much information for me.
But, we have had a bit of a ruffle of sorts, and he is no longer my planner.

And I'm in a traveler's notebook.
A tiny one, even!

I'm not sure how to go about explaining this, because it makes no sense to me.
But I'm loving it.

It started with me adding a week on one page spread to an older (and abandoned!) regular Midori sized insert. Then adding lists and to-dos and such. I had never really done well with to-do lists in my Finsbury, beyond daily or weekly lists. Oh, I would make them, but I wouldn't refer to them as often as I should. In the Midori insert, it was just right there, no extra section to turn to for it.
After a week with that, I moved into an almost Field Notes size notebook I had laying around. And I've been in it since - which was the 10th of August!

It's certainly not fancy, and it's rather messy and plain, but it's suiting me well. Much better than I ever thought it should.
I have a day on a page (though once I finish the notebook I'm in, I will move to a more bullet journal style, where a page can be a day or three days depending on your needs). I have a grocery list thrown in when I need to start it. I have a meal planning page (along with ideas of what to eat for the next week). There's a daily checklist that I make for each week. And lists of things that need to get done at some point.
I even created a booklet that is Field Notes sized to hold addresses, the rest of 2015 for monthly planning, and all of 2016 (though some holidays still need to be filled in).

It's the perfect size. Of course, I'm saying that now - because at one point, I thought Personal size was perfect. At one point, A5 size was perfect. I'm sure my idea of "perfect" will change again at some point. But for now, I'm in little-is-best mode, and it's working well for me.
No, nothing above and beyond is getting done. But, meal planning has went swimmingly well, and I've been writing a to-do list every night for the next day - which has been very helpful, as it allows me to go to bed with tomorrow's intentions in mind, so there is no fumbling in the morning about what I need to be doing.

Liar-liar, pants on fire. I admit to it. Wholeheartedly.

P.S. I was using the Bionicle Midori I had made earlier this year. But I fell in love with planning in that size, so I ordered an actual fauxdori (which has arrived, and will go over here shortly!).

  1. Looks good - and if you are using and referring to it then it is just right for your life at the moment! I do like writing my plan for the next day the night before, it helps get all the random things out of your head so you don't lie there making mental notes rather than going to sleep.

    1. At the moment is sort of how I'm feeling about it. I know, with things being pretty lowkey, it's working out great. If things get any crazier, I'm going to need something else (or many, many more page flags!).
I agree, writing out the list for the next day helps get things out of your head. Though I'm still pretty awesome at the mental notes before going to sleep, ha!
Thanks so much for stopping by! :D

  2. so fantastic! I often think that doing your own planner in a notebook is a better fit than the pre-printed ones, you get to customize it exactly as you need. So cool!

    1. Thank you! Pre-printed planners are convenient, so far as being able to just grab and go, but setting up your own planner pages in some way that suits you best is just a cool thing - as well as it allows you to create something that is even more useful to you!
