I have yet to figure this one out.
Sure, there are things I do on a regular basis that help, but half the time I feel like it's not worth getting out of bed, and the other half of the time I feel like a cyclone - so many things I need to do, and no direction!
A few things that have helped:
- Long(ish) showers - I've never been a need-a-shower-to-wake-up person. I can shower at any time of day and feel more put together afterward. Not 100%, but enough to count for something.
- Cocoa/Tea/Coffee - I have two favorite mugs, that are giant and striped that anything tastes good in. This only works, however, when I don't have something to be working on!
- Crochet - Very repetitive, yet productive, and calming. Sure, after an hour or so, my wrists start to hurt, but after long enough, I might have a new blanket!
- Journaling - Getting thoughts on to paper seems to help. I'm good at talking things over with myself, and I'm good at writing with myself. Writing takes longer than a thought conversation, which makes everything a little more deliberate and meaningful. I can usually end up at a realistic conclusion after a page or two.
And that's it folks.
I can't just curl up on the couch, as our couch is horrible, and I need to be doing something - I have the fidgets! Even if I am sucked into something, I have to rearrange myself often, and that is one of the easiest ways to fall down the path towards distraction.
I enjoy browsing Pinterest, but it depresses me that I can't go paint furniture on a whim, or that I don't have room to have guests over.
I've tried reading books (which is something I used to do all the time), but in the past few years or so my proclivities turned towards the more creative, and less towards the soak-in-a-story kind.
This is something I'm still struggling with - just what is it that I can do to let things go?
I'm not expecting some magic answer to come to me some day, and I'm trying different ways to go about my day - more on that in the future, I promise! But, at the same time, it would be lovely if there would at least be a push in the right direction!
What about you guys - do you have any favorite ways to relax and unwind?

Finding rest can be so tricky! I find that I work hard and rest hard. I try to get as much done during the week and then spend part of the weekend forcing myself to do nothing. I don't have it down...it feels like a life long journey but I think having the determination to find a solution that works for YOU is so worth it. It sounds like you are doing some great things! :-)

Thanks for visiting Sarah, I appreciate it a lot!
ReplyDeleteI, too, enjoy weekends without anything necessary to do, so I never schedule chores for those days. Luckily our apartment is small enough to get away with that!
Life being a journey brings a lot of perspective, that I tend to miss. I always want change right *now* - something else I have to work on, ha :)
